Happy Birthday to You! Pencils Anyone?
What's a Birthday without edible treats? That's a question for Miss E's kindergarten teacher! On the first day of school, Miss E came home with various notices and one of them advised that cupcakes and brownies were not allowed at birthday celebrations, as they were too messy. Suggested birthday treats were listed as cookies, donut holes or rice crispy treats.
Well, last Tuesday was Back to School night and my husband and I both went. Miss E's teacher announced that she and the other kindergarten teacher had decided to amend the birthday policy due to various allergies. Nothing edible would be allowed. Instead, students would be allowed to bring in pencils to pass out, or other small party bag items, and they would also get to borrow the class Birthday Bag containing books and activities about birthdays. (Oh Goody!)
Remember the good old days when you could eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day of the week and bring in decorated cupcakes on your birthday? My how things have changed - - now you get sung to by pencil toting classmates. Oh, what fun! I guess the big plus is that the summer birthday kids don't miss that much!
I'm all for health and well being and I do feel bad for the allergic kids, but I think that we have to draw the line somewhere. Juice boxes and pencils, anyone?

That is SUCH a bummer. I hate the fact that kids today have to miss out on the things that I looked so forward to as a kid. My niece and nephew started Kindergarten a couple of weeks ago. I don't like their teacher, she told my sister that she thinks my nephew is bored. . . .
I'm sure there will soon be an out break of pencil alergies... have no fear!
It's is a bummer how much EVERYTHING has changed sine we where little...Remember riding bikes around the neighborhood alone?
I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR! UGHH. Don't get me started on this. I DREAD packing lunches because of all the restrictions. Even with my boys in mere pre-school, no one is allowed to bring peanut butter. I'm sorry, but I feel pretty confident at some point in my pre school and elementary education some other child was allergic to peanut butter. But i was still able to bring it. What's wrong with telling your child they can't have peanut butter at school and sending an epi pen if they're allergic. Like EMG said, just wait. They'll start crying about lead poisoning soon enough about the birthday pencils.
Well, one month has gone by and two of the 18 kids have already celebrated birthdays. In lieu of treats, one child brought in mini tubs of Play-doh and the other brought in copies of a paperback book from Scholastic.
